Florida, officially kenned as the “State of Florida,” is a state located in the Southeast. As of July of 2022, Florida is the home of over 22 million people respectively—with a majority living near, or on the coast. The state is also known for Disneyworld, beaches, fishing, cheap housing, and alligators. In fact, the median home price in Florida is only about 270,000 dollars. Florida is also the only state in the US which natively has Flamingoes, and is the only place in the US in general which has flamingoes. The capital of Florida has been Tallahassee since 1824, and not long after, Florida became a state in 1845. Tallahassee was chosen as a capital of Florida because it was in between St. Augustine & Pensacola.

Florida is known to have the largest citrus industry in the United States, hence the name “The Orange State.” Florida borders the Gulf of Mexico in the west, the Caribbean Sea in the south, and the Atlantic in the east. Due to Florida not bordering a body of water in the north, Florida is considered a peninsula, which is also why it’s called the “Florida Peninsula.” Florida is the one of the only states, along with Minnesota and Pennsylvania, which have a third degree murder law.

Discovery of Florida[]

Florida was first discovered in 1513 by a conquistador by the name of “Ponce de León.” He then name it La Florida (The Flowers) due to it being the middle of spring, and flowers were blooming in the area. Only a day later, more conquistadors began to explore the peninsula in order to quickly take the land.

Civil War[]

Florida was part of the Slave States during the 19th century, and was also part of the confederate states. Florida had about 44% of its population enslaved during 1860, which was a large problem. In 1861, Florida broke a treaty of it being a “free state,” which caused it to be one of the founders of the confederate states. Florida provided minuscule help during the Civil War, though provided food for the confederate soldiers. By 1864, when the Confederate States lost the Mississippi River, the food eventually became urgent. Despite the food support, they confederacy still lost the civil war.
