Overview[]

Ireland (Irish: Éire), officially known as the “Republic of Ireland,” is a country situated in Europe, on the island of Ireland. The country takes up about 84% of the island’s landmass, with another 16% being taken by Northern Ireland. The country is in the European Union, whom also has Irish as one of the official languages in the European Union. Until 1922, it was under British rule, but Irish people declared independence by 1923.

Good Friday Agreement[]

The Good Friday Agreement, also known as the “Belfast Agreement,” was a treaty signed whom Ireland would give up their occupation of Northern Ireland. This was done to end The Troubles, which had lasted for about 30 years.

Linguistics[]

English and Irish are the two main languages spoken in Ireland, with millions of people speaking them as a primary or secondary language. Irish is also a main language in the European Union, though the language has been classified as “definitely endangered.” This is due to the language only having 170,000 people having the language as their primary, which lowers down to 78,000 outside of education.
