Principiality of Sealand mostly refered to as just Sealand is an unrecognized island nation in the Northern Sea. Sealand is smaller than Vatican City (smallest recognized nation) or any other unrecognized nations, and holds the guiness world record for smallest area claiming nation status[1]. The country is not recognized by anyone[2]. Sealand does not have something like cities or provinces, there is no space for them.

Sealand population was 27 in 2002[3]. In 2021 Sealand had a national census that recorded 308 citizens[4], however, most dont actually live in Sealand.

Etymology[]

The word "Sealand" comes from english "sea" and "land".

Geography[]

Sealand is located in the Northern Sea, about 12km east of UK[5]. It consists of one man-made island, which is Roughs Tower. Sealand owns a territory of 0.004 km2[6].

History[]

Pre-Intependence[]

The tower that Sealand is on was built during WW2 in 1940s and its name is Roughs Tower. A lot of towers like Roughs Tower were built in ww2 all around british territorial waters, while this one was built in international ones. Most of these towers were teared down, but since Roughs Tower was in international waters, it stayed untouched.[7]

Foundation[]

A major in the british army, Roy Bates, wanted to start a radio station. Unfortunately, it was not allowed to start a radio station in UK, only BBC was allowed.

However, there were illegal "pirate" radio stations that you could listen to in UK. British people loved them since they had everything BBC didnt, and Roy Bates wanted to start one. So he started it on a naval fart named "Knock John" but it turned out it was in UK's territorial waters. So, he found another abandoned naval base called Roughs Tower that was not in british territorial waters. In the end, he didnt start a new pirate radio station on the new base, but instead, after talking to his lawyers, created a whole country on Sept 2, 1967.[7]

1978 Coup d'etat[]

In August 1978, Alexander Achenbach, who described himself as the Prime Minister of Sealand, hired several German and Dutch mercenaries to lead an attack on Sealand while Bates and his wife were in Austria invited by Achenbach to discuss the sale of Sealand. Achenbach disagreed with Bates plan to turn Sealand into a luxury hotel with casinos. They stormed the tower and took Michael Bates, Roy Bates' son, hostage. Michael, however, could retake Sealand and capture Achenbach and his mercenaries. Achenbach was a lawyer with Sealand citizenship, and therefore was charged with treason, and was held in jail until he paid 75K german marks (35K dollars). A german diplomat then went to Sealand to discuss his release. Sealand claims that Germany recognized its intependence with that visit.[8]

2006 Fire[]

On afternoon of June 23, 2006, the platform caught fire due to electric fault. British helicopter sent a person to a hospital in Ipswich directly from the tower. A lifeboat stood near the tower until the fire stopped. All damage was repaired by November 2006. This was the only fire in history that covered an entire country.[9]

Roy Bates Death[]

Roy Bates, the founder and first prince of Sealand, died at the age of 91 on October 9, 2012. His son Michael Bates took over Sealand, although he lives in the UK where he operates a company. Roy Bates' wife Joan Bites died on March 10, 2016, at the age of 86
