Washington is the 42nd state, nicknamed the Evergreen State, admitted to the United States of America on November 11th, 1889. It is the 18th most expansive state and the 13th most populous state in the US.

Its largest city, with a population of 620,778 as of the United States 2011 Population Estimates, is Seattle. Its capital is situated at Olympia in the central part of the state. Other major cities include Spokane, Tacoma, Bellevue, Everett, Kent, Puyallup, Vancouver, and Yakima, Walla Walla, and the Tri-Cities (Pasco, Richland, Kennewick). Most of the major cities lie in the Puget Sound area, a small bay that eventually leads into the Pacific Ocean via the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Interstate 5 and Interstate 90 are the major highways in the state.
